Tell me about the latest books you have published.

Coincidentally, this year I have published two books almost simultaneously; one of short stories and the other, essays. "No aceptes caramelos de extraños" is a volume containing eleven short stories that explore the experiences of parents and children, siblings and couples in extreme situations. It was a work of poetic and intimate prose that traces a hyperrealist portrait of an ambiguous and sensual violence that puts stress on these "nuclear" relations. They are stories that originate in desire, not in a morbid desire but one filled with loneliness and anguish that disrupts everything and whose unavoidable stage is the body. I believe they are crude portraits devoid of moral judgments, written in that thin line between eroticism and the thanatos, with a language purified with images, sentences repeated like tidal waves, phrases that jump like splinters able to create a psychological and emotional syntax.

The other book is an essay entitled "Hablan los hijos. Estéticas y discursos en la literatura de perspectiva infantil en la literatura contemporánea" where I analyze childhood as a literary strategy that, through an artful device -- a child's perspective by an adult author --, generates an instrument that makes you look at this concept beyond a theme, and allows you to study it from an aesthetic and ideological perspective. Why and in what situations do children speak? What are the consequences of the young presence in the fictional operation? These questions underlie the analysis of narrative and theatrical texts by Laura Alcoba, Ana María Del Río, Francisca Bernadi and Ana Harcha, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Beatriz García Huidobro, Clarice Lispector, Compañía La Troppa, Juan Mayorga, Andrea Moro, António Lobo Antunes, José Sanchís Sinisterra and José Triana.

In both books, "minor" subjects serve as metaphors of the body as a platform for power and abuse, for the inherent drive for dominance and annihilation, for the need of a scapegoat where violence can be satisfied, for the tendency to commercialize vulnerable beings. But perhaps this obsession, in children, in childhood, in intimate relations, are already present in my first novel "Escenario de guerra."

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
Yes, my two novels are available as e-books through Uqbar and ebooks Patagonia. A number of my short stories are accessible through e-journals, such as the emblematic "Los noveles," in the site of "El futuro no es nuestro" by the Colombian magazine "Pie de Página," the publishing house Libros de Mentira, as well as my Webpage.

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
I don't read many blogs or digital magazines in periodical form, perhaps I follow the ones that come to me via mail like "Revista de Letras," it's not for lack of interest but because I get dizzy with so much information and for lack of time. In a disorganized manner I could say that I never miss the interviews by Silvina Freira in "Página 12," sometimes I follow Patricio Pron's blog, the one by Edmundo Paz Soldán, and "Moleskine literario" by Iván Thays, the journal "Intemperie" directed by the Chilean author Pablo Torche, and well, social media, specially Facebook, which offers interesting articles and links, depending on the user, of course, but in general all the information shared by the Argentinian authors Carina Maguregui and Ana Arzoumanian; pure gems.

And, of course, I belong to the generation of "Los noveles" directed by Salvador Luis that initiated the possibility to read one another among Spanish American authors, something that no multinational or independent publisher has been able to achieve. As I told Salvador, it made us discover authors from our countries and beyond them. Authors who often became more real in books that we had access to, or like colleagues in cultural encounters, festivals or book fairs. Finally the project “El futuro no es nuestro,” lead by Diego Trelles Paz, made the same achievement, a knowledge and apetite by new authors and sense of community.

Mis referentes van desde Manuel Puig, Juan Rulfo, Juan Marsé, Belén Gopegui, Julio Cortázar, Sergio Chejfec, Margo Glantz, Rosario Castellanos, Elena Garro, Marosa Di Giorgio, Cristina Peri Rossi. De Chile, José Donoso, María Luisa Bombal, Marta Brunet, Carlos Droguett, Diamela Eltit, Ana María Del Río, Guadalupe Santa Cruz, Pía Barros, Augusto D´Halmar. También los dramaturgos  españoles Angélica Liddlel, Juan Mayorga. En poesía, César Vallejo, Blanca Varela, Luisa Futoransky, Nestor Perlonguer, la gran Mistral, Carmen Berenguer, Eugenia Brito, Elvira Hernández, Enrique Lihn, Raúl Zurita; tantos más.

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
I'm a very ecclectic reader in terms of traditions, aesthetics and literary genres. My influences range from Manuel Puig to Juan Rulfo, Juan Marsé, Belén Gopegui, Julio Cortázar, Sergio Chejfec, Margo Glantz, Rosario Castellanos, Elena Garro, Marosa Di Giorgio and Cristina Peri Rossi. From Chile: José Donoso, María Luisa Bombal, Marta Brunet, Carlos Droguett, Diamela Eltit, Ana María Del Río, Guadalupe Santa Cruz, Pía Barros, Augusto D'Halmar. Also the Spanish playwrights Angélica Liddlel and Juan Mayorga. In poetry: César Vallejo, Blanca Varela, Luisa Futoransky, Nestor Perlonguer, the great Mistral, Carmen Berenguer, Eugenia Brito, Elvira Hernández, Enrique Lihn, Raúl Zurita and so many others.

What other writers have influenced your work?
I would like to answer this question by "curating" my own list and not just naming people. I have been a good reader of "libertines" like the Marquis de Sade, Henry Miller, Anaïs Nin, Margarite Duras, Pierre Klossowski and Fleur Jaeggy. Elfriede Jelinek, a late discovery but marvelous in each of her projects. In general, I find the cross between eroticism and politics very powerful.

Then I have another leaning that’s a great connection with literature from Central and Eastern Europe, I like its crudeness, its emotional restrain to narrate horror, collective traumas. This is the case of writers such as Herta Müller, Agotha Kristof, Milan Kundera, Thomas Benhard, Peter Handke, Elías Canetti, Danilo Kis, Ivo Andric. I’m also interested in this counterpoint between drama and restrain in Japanese writers, such as the unparallel mastery of Yukio Mishima and Yasunari Kawabata. Among English-speaking writers I will mention with devotion Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy. The Italians Simona Vinci and Erri De Luca are my new discoveries. From Israel, I love Amos Oz, David Grossman and Etger Keret.

Thirdly, the classic tragedies, especially by Euripides, Sophocles and the rewrites of those texts by Shakespeare, Racine, followed by further rewrites in other geographies and times, by Griselda Gambaro, José Watanabe and José Triana. By the way, reading theater has a bit of charm, it forces you to rehearse a perspective, and to taste the art of dialog. Precisely because I like to cross genres, writing novels that are poems, essay that are novels, I also add the reading of essays and theory because it's all writing. This is the case of Michel Foucault, Sigmund Freud, Susan Sontag, George Steiner, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi and Giorgio Agamben; thinkers with writing styles and ideas that move readers.

And lastly, the Lusophone world is a very rich universe that resonates in me. I have followed with special interest Clarice Lispector, Guimarães Rosa, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Hilda Hist, António Lobo Antunes and Fernando Pessoa.

Now, I have also "read" a lot of fine arts and film, I'm thinking of influences such as Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Egon Schiele, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward Munch, Giacometti, Ana Mendieta. In film, Kielowski, Roman Polanski, Luis Buñuel, Lucrecia Martel, the Dogma group, Theo Angelopoulos, Bergman, and many others.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
Many, I'm already stressed out because I can't manage to read my contemporaries. I will make a mischievous gesture, in order to limit the list and avoid mentioning names already included in other interviews or present in this project, I will only recommend fellow contemporary women writers. From Mexico, I like the work of Guadalupe Nettel and Valeria Luiselli; from Colombia, Alejandra Jaramillo and Carolina Sanín; from Bolivia, Giovanna Rivero and Liliana Colanzi; from Puerto Rico, Mayra Santos Febres and Yolanda Arroyo; from Cuba, Ana Lidia Vega and Ena Lucía Portela. From Argentina there are numerous, Samanta Schweblin, Carina Maguregui, Ana Arzoumanian, Matilde Sánchez, Fernanda García Lao. From Spain, Elvina Navarro, Mercedes Cebrían and Lolita Bosch.

I could provide an infinite list of Chilean women authors but I will concentrate on fiction writers such as Nona Fernández, Lina Meruane, Beatriz García Huidobro, Eugenia Prado, Cynthia Rimsky, Andrea Maturana, Alejandra Costamagna and Claudia Apablaza.

Ya he entrevistado a Pedro Lemebel, José Watanabe, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Ricardo Piglia, Isidora Aguirre y Carla Matteini.

What are you working on now?

In a short or medium term, I'm working on two fiction books. One is a book of travel accounts to "border regions," which for me stands for regions where I have experienced moments that are related to geographic, historic, cultural, political and/or linguistic limits. These borders speak of the tensions, frictions that one experiences in these spaces and the echos that emerge as a result for the traveling author. They are accounts that combine reality and fiction in order to write about travels to Peru, Bosnia-Herzegovina, United States, Spain, Cuba, Brazil, Portugal, the Middle East and even Chile.

I'm also making progress on a novel that studies domestic matters, from toys to the routine of cleaning and school activities. I have always worked on difficult subjects, and needed to do it, like violence, memory, trauma, so I then decided to begin from another place, from daily life and then create tensions. It's an amusing novel about the daily life, and ironically against maternity.

In the long run, I want to finish a book of in-depth interviews to writers. I have already interviewed Pedro Lemebel, José Watanabe, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Ricardo Piglia, Isidora Aguirre and Carla Matteini. The goal is to contact a writer and make his or her creative processes known, reconstructing his or her poetry. I would like to add Margo Glantz, Luisa Futoransky, Juan Mayorga, Mario Bellatin and others.

How would you like future libraries to be?
I believe it already exists and it's a reading room named in honor of Robert Morrison in the Central Library of the University of California, Berkeley. I love public libraries, that silence that accompanies you with views to the stacks. This is a reading room filled with books in open stacks, with a beautiful light and very soft sofas. I spent wonderful afternoons there, at any time you can fall sleep with a book on your chest, or meditate or else be in that limbo between reading and daydreaming, between reality or fiction. For me it was an oasis and it represents the best scenario to concentrate on your reading.

________________________________________________________

De quienes he escrito y me he burlado sin vehemencia.

Tell me about the latest books you have published.

La Biblia Vaquera” is my most recent book. It’s a new edition, corrected and expanded. It includes one extra short story and an epilog. The text has generated a lot of controversy. It has enjoyed recognition and yet I consider it minor compared to my prior work, “La marrana negra de la literatura rosa.” What began as a game for me has turned into something serious for other people. The book sets in motion the concept of the “
posnorteña condition”, which began as a joke, but now, the word is, though to be honest I’m not certain, it’s a research topic in North American universities. This has annoyed certain “critics.” But I don’t care. Only a fool would take personally a diversion such as the one proposed in this book. They have accused me of everything, of being a closeted chilango. And all because the critics from the center have welcomed with enthusiasm my work. But critics don’t receive kickbacks from me, nor do I have power or influence on them. I had never suffered the jealousy of other writers before. And I can say that they are worse than female jealousy. It’s baffling how individuals who are so intelligent could fall prey to such deceit and throw tantrums over the little recognition that someone else receives. “La Biblia Vaquera” has several premises; one of them was, for sure, to slam the door on a certain (Mexican) northern literature, but not the one I come from, which critics believe the book is rebelling against. They are wrong. But like they say in my village: "let’s see, beat the PRI." “La Biblia Vaquera” is a book that got completed toward the end of 2005. And numerous publishers rejected it. It wasn’t until 2008 that it saw the light of day in CONACULTA. And in 2011 it was published by Sexto Piso. In other words, the tiny success it has enjoyed was not immediate. The book has fought to make a place for itself in the literary scene. I never imagined I would succeed. My literary career has been a bit meteoric. “La Biblia Vaquera” has led me to a voyage that may seem implausible. One day I am waiting for the bus and the next one I am talking, doing drugs and drinking alcohol, with the political class that fucked this country over. About whom I have written and mocked dispassionately.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?
Y me parece ridículo. Entonces, no he publicado ebooks.

Have you published in electronic format?
This question bitters me out. This topic has been in fashion for a few years. And I think it's ridiculous. To qualify it as snobbish is falling short. Based on statistics, only 0.3% of the population uses a Kindle. So then, what future are they talking about? How dare they predict the end of the book. If we take a look at the number of publications in Spain alone in 2011, 103,000 titles were published. Charly García has a phrase that I love: "that's the way the avant-garde is." It can be read two ways, one with condemnation, the other with praise. In this case, I do not understand the urgency of avant-gardes to happen before their time. I'm not interested in e-books. I'm not interested in the format. I don't wish to read on a screen. Up to now, the only people who have seriously concerned themselves with this have been publishers, and not all of them. And some gadget enthusiasts have declared themselves in favor. But what can you expect from nerds, if they want to be nerdier every day. If as authors we are already branded as strange birds, we don't need to become more extravagant in that sense. So then, I have not published e-books. Nor do I believe it will happen for the time being. I know colleagues who have offered their work in that format. The majority does it for a simple reason. It has become too difficult to be part of the editorial market. It hasn't been my case. But if I ever found myself in that limbo, where I was once already, without publishing, perhaps I would try to adapt myself to electronic tools. Nowadays, I'm not against it. But I am not interested to be part of that culture. Besides, how many quality books are offered in electronic format? The majority you have access to is garbage. García Márquez among them. I prefer to abstain myself.

I have only published short texts in electronic format. In 2010, I collaborated in a German project called Los Superdemokraticos, which grouped 25 authors writing about Latin America. Only two Mexicans were chosen for this project, and I was one of them. The texts were written in Spanish and translated into German. A compilation of the texts was published in book form in Berlin. You can access my contributions in: http://superdemokraticos.com/es/author/carlos/.

Another thing I have published in that format is the blog I maintain for the magazine "Gatopardo."

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
I don’t use that type of media. I’m still hooked on books. I pick up the majority of references from Twitter, to which I am addicted. I have noticed that some users have posted links to interesting texts. And I wander through the content, but it’s temporary. I forget it. I go back to the book. The information super highway overwhelms me. I am only attracted to blogs where you can download music. Occasionally they have contacted me with an invitation to participate in an anthology. I am against anthologies, printed or electronic. I think the interest of certain enthusiasts is commendable because literature then reaches a larger public and other sectors, readers who feed themselves from the Web, but I think the lack of rigor causes serious problems of appreciation for the work. I have not published a short story in any magazine in over five years, and before that, I only published two or three. I want my stories to be read from my books of short stories. Not like loose leaves. I’m not interested in chance in my literature. I hate the fever for anthologies that has gotten unleashed in Mexico, and blogs are that in the end. In the last few years, everyone wants to have the last word and elaborate their recount, always arbitrarily; I don’t care if anyone disagrees. Especially poets.

What other writers have influenced your work?

I barely read literature in Spanish. My proximity to the border, and my natural rejection of the Latin American Boom, to which previous generations of writers from my region are so devout, has made me a regular reader of gringos. I admire them for various reasons, the main one is that they are great structuralists. This is something that literature in my language does not provide me. From García Márquez to “Los detectives salvajes,” fiction has not been modified structurally in a considerable way. We revise it even among authors of my generation. In my opinion, there is nothing more reactionary than a novel written in 2010 that still preserves an unpleasant aftertaste of magic realism. How much time must go by before we manage to leave behind all that “tradition”? It is necessary for Latin America to learn how to write fiction. To date, the only thing that young authors have to offer is the replay of a model. There are writers who already did that, like Osvaldo Lamborghini, however they are considered rare cases, atypical, because they resisted belonging to the same cultural block. Presently, let’s revise the most important novels, such as “Blanco nocturno” or “Los Living,” things have not changed. Caparrós is a fraud, and his text that won the Herralde Award serves as a proof. The formula has been tested. Then people don’t want to believe that literature in Spanish is not in crisis. Many dare to call me innocent. For an answer I can use as an example the latest novels by Frazen and Lethem. They are two writers who prove that the generational relay implies a cultural renewal. And Mexico is no exception. We have the worst. Carlos Fuentes. Who departed pretending to be original with a novel about drug trafficking and another about vampires. Just what we needed.

(No tan nuevos): Rodrigo Fresán, Ray Loriga.

Los que no recomiendo: Guadalupe Nettel, Santiago Rocangliolo. (No tan nuevos): Ricardo Piglia, Caparrós.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
It’s a short list. For this reason, I will create two. The one you requested and another one for authors I do not recommend.

Among the first [recommended]: Yuri Herrera, Emiliano Monge, Julián Herbert, Antonio Ortuño, Fabián Casas (as a narrator), Edmundo Paz Soldán, Heriberto Yépez. (Not so new): Rodrigo Fresán, Ray Loriga.

The ones I do not recommend: Guadalupe Nettel, Santiago Rocangliolo. (Not so new): Ricardo Piglia, Caparrós.

What are you working on now?
I am about to finish my first novel. We are now ready to launch a book of short stories pertaining to the musician Celso Piña.

How would you like future libraries to be?
I hate public spaces. Whenever I enter a library I understand why Yépez hates us all.

Ahora tendré que matarte. Colección Flexes Terpines, Cauce Editorial, 2001.

Prontos, listos, ya. Artefato, 2006; Puntocero, 2010.

________________________________________________________________

Tell me about the latest books you have published.
The last two are the only ones: "Ahora tendré que matarte" came out a decade ago. It has been a few years since my second book, "Prontos, listos, ya," was published. It was printed in 2006 and a new edition came out in 2010. This past year some of my short stories were published in three anthologies: "Región" (Argentina), "El futuro no es nuestro" (Mexico, United States, Panama), "22 mujeres" (Uruguay).

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
A series of stories for the project "Palabras errantes," a vignette in "Suelta" and others in "Nuestra aparente rendición," something perhaps androgynous in "Los Noveles," a short story in "El futuro no es nuestro"…

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
I am not a person who is very up to date. Here in Uruguay, there is a tree-structured [collective] site that can be used as a beautiful portal to get acquainted with the work of various contemporary poets. It's called "Las elecciones afectivas." And then there are the ones I have already named. "Suelta," "Los Noveles," "Palabras errantes," and also "Vivir del cuento." These are projects led by writers and agents who are committed, active and curious. They are all members of an expedition.

Seré impune y nombraré a los timoneles: Felisberto Hernández, Marosa di Giorgio, Hebe Uhart, Bioy Casares, Manuel Puig, Juan Carlos Onetti, Horacio Quiroga, Mário Cesariny, Clarice Lispector, Fernando Pessoa, Mario Levrero, Rosa Chacel, César Vallejo…

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
In making a list of these favorites, my courage fluctuates, I am full of anxiety with the doubt and the certainty that I am omitting, being unjust or capricious. I will be absolved and will name the leaders: Felisberto Hernández, Marosa di Giorgio, Hebe Uhart, Bioy Casares, Manuel Puig, Juan Carlos Onetti, Horacio Quiroga, Mário Cesariny, Clarice Lispector, Fernando Pessoa, Mario Levrero, Rosa Chacel, César Vallejo... It is quite possible that tomorrow, during the day –while walking or getting the clothes off the line – will say to myself something like "how could I forget to include this sublime writer or this grandiose female author?"

Mark Twain, Boris Vian, JD Salinger, Carson McCullers, Jane Bowles, Flaubert, Dostoievski, Tolstoi, London, Stevenson, Chesterton, Nathalie Sarraute, Camus, Vladimir Nabokov, John Cheever, Louise May Alcott, John Steinbeck, Yukio Mishima...

What other writers have influenced your work?
Mark Twain, Boris Vian, JD Salinger, Carson McCullers, Jane Bowles, Flaubert, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, London, Stevenson, Chesterton, Nathalie Sarraute, Camus, Vladimir Nabokov, John Cheever, Louise May Alcott, John Steinbeck, Yukio Mishima... And right away: how could I forget to include the sublime Scott Fitzgerald, or the grandiose Flannery O’Connor? And Katherine Mansfield? Heavens!

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
During these last few years, thanks to "El futuro no es nuestro" and the precious harvest of Diego Trelles Paz, the encounter "Fet a Amèrica" ("Made in America") organized by Lolita Bosch and Fernanda Álvarez in Barcelona, and the "Diálogos Narrativos Latinoamericanos" ("Latin American Narrative Dialogs") of the last Santiago Book Fair, I met a constellation of new female and male writers with enormous talent. I will speak here and now of some Uruguayan authors of short stories and novels that I like very much: Sofi Richero, Horacio Cavallo, Damián González Bertolino, Dani Umpi… But Armonía Somers (1914-1994) can also be new, very new. For me she is pretty new, despite her trajectory. And she is great.

What are you working on now?
A collection of stories, occurrences, definitions, mandates and examples.
A short story.
A script for a feature film (with Ana Katz).
A treatment for a script intended for a feature film (with Federico Veiroj).
I would like to go back to a novel that I had put aside. I left it in the midst of some problems (mine and the novel's). It would be nice to rescue each other soon and untie the knots.

How would you like future libraries to be?
I would like the large stacks to remain, the thousands of books cataloged with inventory and call numbers (as they are organized in our National Library) and the silence. I like old-fashioned books, with pages, with texture, with smell and some marks. If I'm allowed to make any requests, I would ask for large windows with natural light and even a park with shade, to bless those of us who like to read outside. And if I may continue pestering, I would request digitizing books to bring collections up to date, and that one may find novels by Carlos Yushimito, Alejandra Costamagna, Diego Trelles Paz or Pablo Raphael in any format: paper or e-book. And now, well established in my condition of fantasizer-who-abuses-the-dream-she-has-been-asked-to-dream, I think it would be great if there were traditional libraries for some materials and open stacks or sections for others. Libraries like the ones we have always known, with that genuine silence, with the dumbwaiter bringing down books, cracking with a promise, and then media libraries with all the books one would wish to read shamelessly, also with music and films nearby. Because the experience of reading is like this: one reads something and then wants to listen to this song or watch that film, and perhaps it could all be there, one door away. I would walk between the classic space and this other building – maddening, tumultuous – with great pleasure.
