Tell me about the latest books you have published.
The latest book I published, “€®O$,” came out recently in pocket book edition. It’s an essay on the sociological aspects of personal relations where I tackle the subject of the commercial and discursive production of sentimentality in this phase of capiltalism that we are living, highlighting the factors in emotional life that are most directly tied to the culture of trends, aesthetics, and, generally, to economics. This study was the first of a series of writings whose work title,  formulated in one of the texts I recite in my performances, is “Transferencias afectivas y movimientos contables” (“Emotional Transfers and Countable Movements”). The next issue of this series, which has just come out, is entitled “Emociónese así” (“Get Excited This Way”), and it’s the most direct, instrumental and humorous that I have written; it’s like a song divided into fifteen sections. It’s also the book where I have worked the structure the most. It’s divided into two series of alternating texts with a long poem as a central piece. In the first section, which is the most conceptual in nature, I comment on some pairing opposites, or binary oppositions, that determine our intimate life such as what’s personal and relational, or the polymorphous perversity and the concensus on practices of desire. The second series, called “Publi,” is a study on “corporate literature,” meaning the diverse forms of commercials that are considered ideological symptoms or sociological indicators. An important aspect of the book is that it allows four forms of reading, each of them placing the reader in a different receptive position: you can read only the conceptual part, without the commercials (“Frankfurt School” position) or the “Publi,” without the concepts (“alienated” position), or everything continiously (the “traditional” position, which in this case is just a possible option, rather than the only or principal one), or you can read it guided by the “Índice Emocional” (“Emotional Index”) that I provide at the beginning of the book, and where you can find the main fifty emotions that one can (and must!) feel. What else can I say? I really enjoyed myself through the writing process. Instead of doing a normal presentation, I introduce the book by means of a spoken word act entitled "Rulers of Your Feelings" in which different ideas are personified in several characters that I perform. Here is a preview.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
Though I’m not much of a fixture, I have collaborated in the contemporary thought page “salonKritik” and, occationally, in the femenist webpage “Píkara.” Lately, I have been loading more videos than texts on the web. In the webpage of the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona), Youtube and Vimeo, you can see videos of filmed spoken word sessions based on “€®O$,” which has been my main individual performance project, as well as the performance piece “Personificación,” which we produced as the Afterpop Fernández & Fernández duo. Last spring, we did a US tour and performed in the Cervantes Institute of Chicago, Iowa City, Dartmouth College and Brown University, this last on the occasion of the Transatlantic Congress organized by Julio Ortega. A good number of these filming sessions are the work of the producer Natxo Medina from Barcelona, with whom I have collaborated to create the booktrailer for “Emociónse así,” which takes place in a bowling alley, the scene of one of the sections of the book, developed from a lengthy commentary on “The Big Lebowski” and entitled “Todo lo que siempre quiso saberacerca de la dinámica sujeto-objeto en el capitalismo tardío y no se atrevía apreguntarle al El Nota” (“All you ever wanted to know about the subject-object dynamic during the late capitalist period and you didn’t dare to ask El Nota”).

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
From Chile the webpage “Lucha Libro”; from Mexico, “Hermano Cerdo”; from Argentina, Luis Diego Fernández’s blog; from Spain, among the most recent, “I Faked Roger Rabbit”, by the excellent poet Unai Velasco.

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
Right now I have two general lines of research and reading in which various Ibero-American authors convene. On one hand, I’m very interested in a line of writing about aesthetics mainly developed in Argentina, which includes different authors with certain commonalities, such as Graciela Speranza or Reinaldo Laddaga. Each in their own way are making very relevant contributions to the study of literature and the arts and their works help define a creative paradigm in progress where the relationships and imbrications between creative practices constitute the central motive behind poetics. It’s not a coincidence that all of them have dedicated illuminating folios to the work of the Mexican writer Mario Bellatin, whose projects halfway between the experimental novel and contemporary art have open new roads.

A second line of interest of mine are writings on gender, or about the technical and cultural production of sexuation, with an spectrum that covers from third-wave feminism to the international queer, which has a particularly relevant contingency in Latin America. From the first group, the writer María Moreno from Buenos Aires is important to me. She has significantly contributed to the renewal of gender theory language through a style that is dynamic, humorous and very rich in a literary sense. From the second line, I would highlight some authors who can already be considered new classics and have commanded a profound influence, such as Roberto Echavarren from Uruguay, an excellent essay-writer and scholar of post-porn, androgeny and what’s beyond gender; or, the justifiably admired Pedro Lemebel from Chile, who has been writing for so many years, if you allow me the malice, what Lorca would have written had he been a good writer and not so corny, obsessed with big dramas involving gypsies and dead bullfighters.

What other writers have influenced your work?
I like a great deal the North American punk literature that was developed in the underground world of the sixties. If in its origin Andreas Huyssen called it “early postmodernism,” now it’s rather the “high criticism” of our times and has expanded its scope of influence to other fields like music and comic books. I have been developing various projects in this domain. Regarding William Burroughs, to whom I already dedicated a chapter in my first essay, I have published an extensive text in the anthology “Beatitud: Visiones de la generación beat” edited by Vicente Muñoz Álvarez and Nacho Escuín. I have also created a spoken word version of an epitaph of his novel “The Ticket That Exploded” that I usually recite in my performances wearing an S&M mask. Another author, along the same line, who is beginning to gain notoriety in the Spanish-speaking world is Harold Jaffe from San Diego State University, a master of punk narrative. I have written an introductory study for his collection of stories “15 Serial Killers,” which will soon come out, and also a presentation note for his most recent collection of essays, “Revolutionary Brain.” On the other hand, last year I proposed to Jorge Herralde re-editing Kathy Acker’s brutal novel “Blood and Guts in High School,” which will appear in a few months and will include an introduction written by me. By the way, I see that the publishing house Escalera has just translated “Empire of the Senseless” by the same author as well. Perhaps the most recent author continuing Acker’s line of work is Lydia Lunch. I have written several things about her literary texts that will be included in my next book.

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
I have recently discovered, with enthusiasm, the work of the video artist Mika Rottenberg, who has created some sensational pieces about globalized industrial labor. Among essay-writers, I have enjoyed “Literaturas_Past” by Juan José Mendoza and “Filosofía zombi” by Jorge Fernández Lozano. As to novelists, I found “Fresy Cool” by Antonio J. Rodríguez quite good. It’s a “fake first novel” written by an author who seems to have been writing with great talent all his life. Also, the juicy post-sexual accounts by the Peruvian author Gabriela Wiener. Among recently published books, I have also been quite interested in the (anti)novel "Adrift's Book" by the Mexican writer Sayak Valencia, a brutal cross between the noir genre and Gertrude Stein.

What are you working on now?
I have, in its advanced stages, a volume of writings that represents my satirical theory of masculinity. The book is based on a series of columns entitled “Medianenas & Milhombres” that were published in the cultural supplement of “La Vanguardia,” but aside from these short texts that I have rewritten, 90% of the material is unpublished and includes articles about gender in music, literary counter-criticism, texts to recite, stories and microstories, a typology of the representation of late capitalist masculinity and various samples of a type of text that I have invented, where I transfer to literature some techniques inherent to DJ sessions. Of all my books, this is the one that provides the most balance between the theory and essay parts, and not because I have reached a dialectic – I’m not Hegelian – but because the project demands it: because many of those themes are eager to be approached from a humorous critical perspective, and because their purpose is to present up to what point the pedagogy of gender that we are exposed to, each day and on every occasion, is a fictional discourse, a plot of imaginary scripts about sexuality and the performance that we accept and impose with astonishing ease.

How would you like future libraries to be?
I would like there to be an elephant in the entrance of each library, not an effigy but a live one. It’s an idea that has been pursuing me for years since I read an anecdote in Claudius Aelianus’ “On the Characteristics of Animals” about one of the first and greatest occidental librarians, the grammarian Aristophanes of Byzantium, who was responsible for the Library of Alexandria. Aristophanes was being shadowed at all times by an elephant that, according to Aelianus, had fallen in love with him. I’m very fond of this juxtaposition between archival culture and the foolish sexuality of the beast.

Tell me about the latest books you have published.

Last year I published a story in an anthology. The story was entitled “El torturador” and it won first prize in a contest that also published the honorary mentions. I also published a novella entitled “Los abismos posibles.”  It’s a small book that is hard to define. It speaks of many things and it’s a bit disorganized. It follows the steps of a man from Tangiers who travels by sea to Santoña and is obsessed with the darkness of the waters, with black water. Images of Natalie Wood, Juan de la Cosa, an alcoholic British writer and other events are mixed with his reflections and movements. The writing follows a random path and superimpositions. “El torturador” is a story about the son of a poet who decides to invent instruments of torture in order to do research on the human body.

¿Has publicado en formato electrónico?

Have you published in electronic format?
A fragment of my novella came out in “Los Noveles.” After that, nothing official, but once in a while, while surfing the Web, I find something I wrote that someone decided to upload.

What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
In my opinion, the archive of “Los Noveles” continues to be an interesting space that one needs to revisit constantly. “Hermano Cerdo” and some of the blogs from “El Boomerang” are also quite attractive. You also have “Etiqueta Negra” and the blog of Eterna Cadencia. Now I also read every issue of “Revista Tónica.” Then there are places you find by chance or thanks to Twitter, places you may sometimes return to or visit just once, but perhaps you find something that was worth it. Also the cultural pages from different Latin American newspapers (for example, I just read “Las figuras de la literatura del siglo XXI” in “Ñ,” an interesting article about young fiction writers from Argentina that made me want to read them all).

Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?

As usual, when it comes to giving out names for an interview, many fall through the cracks or, on the contrary, we name some that are not so close to us, all in the heat of the moment. I would name references like Cervantes, Calderón de la Barca, Enrique Vila-Matas, Vicente Luis Mora (Spain); Antonio Lobo Antunes, Fernando Pessoa (Portugal); Borges, Arlt, Rodrigo Fresán, Ricardo Piglia, Manuel Puig, Antonio Di Benedetto (Argentina); Mario Levrero, Juan Carlos Onetti, Felisberto Hernández (Uruguay); Roberto Bolaño (Chile); Mario Bellatin (Perú); Juan Rulfo (México); Jaime Saenz, Óscar Cerruto (Bolivia). I know I’m forgetting many. The list could go on and on.

Lewis Carroll, Franz Kafka, John Kennedy Toole, Malcolm Lowry, Herman Melville, H.P. Lovecraft, Cormac McCarthy, Don DeLillo, Georges Perec, Italo Calvino, Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima,  J.M. Coetzee, Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, Daniel Clowes, Craig Thompson, Dylan Horrocks.

What other writers have influenced your work?
Lewis Carroll, Franz Kafka, John Kennedy Toole, Malcolm Lowry, Herman Melville, H.P. Lovecraft, Cormac McCarthy, Don DeLillo, Georges Perec, Italo Calvino, Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima, J.M. Coetzee, Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, Daniel Clowes, Craig Thompson, Dylan Horrocks. Now that I see the last two lists I realize they are rather conventional.

¿Qué nuevos autores hispanohablantes recomendarías?
Sé que voy a olvidar a algunos, pero los que más me cautivan en este momento son Federico Falco, Luciano Alberti, Juan Terranova, Pola Oloixarac, Patricio Pron (Argentina); Andrea Jeftanovic, Alejandro Zambra, Diego Zúñiga (Chile); Maximiliano Barrientos, Liliana Colanzi, Sebastián Antezana, Wilmer Urrelo y Juan Pablo Piñeiro (Bolivia).

What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
I know I’m going to forget some, but the ones who captivate me the most right now are Federico Falco, Luciano Alberti, Juan Terranova, Pola Oloixarac, Patricio Pron (Argentina); Andrea Jeftanovic, Alejandro Zambra, Diego Zúñiga (Chile); and Maximiliano Barrientos, Liliana Colanzi, Sebastián Antezana, Wilmer Urrelo and Juan Pablo Piñeiro (Bolivia).

What are you working on now?

I’m trying to finish a novel that I been dragging along for years. Now I have changed my mind and I have been distancing myself from this project, that’s why it does not convince that much at the moment, but I believe it’s necessary to finish it and continue that path created in the past. I have also slowly started creating a plan for a new novel in which I’m gradually getting trapped into with more enthusiasm and, compared to the other one, it’s more in tune with what I’m currently interested in. After many years, almost a decade, I began to write short stories almost in a row. I’m now finishing them and correcting them.

How would you like future libraries to be?
Enormous, almost never-ending. They should contain thousands and thousands of books, and you should be responsible for finding them yourself. They should not be a labyrinth, but a place with precise signage that allows you to get lost in the stacks and find what you need. In any case, I believe they should be in touch with technology. I prefer books in print, but I get very frustrated when I can’t find a volume I’m looking for. I don’t know, books in print in buildings where computers or pleasant robots assist you with your search, but they should not get too involved. I know that with time I will have to cave in and accept e-books, it’s not something that bothers me too much, but paper is the first thing that drew me to reading, moving pages, the covers, all that. I suppose that one must always find new obsessions. Now that I keep thinking, there should be libraries that specialize in teleportation.
